How Can I Find A Specific Classification Code?
When trying to build a search query, you may want to use a specific classification code to either refine your results or specifically find patents that have this particular classification code. There are various ways to do this, these include:
1. Use the refinement filters: Once you have reached the search results page after completing your search, you can use the filters on the left-hand side of the screen to refine your results using specific classification codes, as seen in the image below (You can find out more about the refine options here: Filtering Your Results). If the Classification refinement option isn't available, please click on "More Filters" and make sure it is selected.
2. Use the classification code helpers: From the field search page, you can select the classification code helpers at the right hand end of the relevant classification text boxes. If you type a keyword into them, you will be given a number of suggestions of classification codes related to your search, these can then be added to refine your search.
3. Use the classification search: Using the classification search you are able to search using a keyword for all the classification codes of that type that contains the inputted keyword. From this, you can search for all the patents that have a specific classification code. You can find out more about the classification search here: What Is Classification Search?
4. Use the search fields in your query: Alternatively, if you are already familiar with building queries on Patsnap, you can directly use the search fields (found in our Search Helper)
- CLASS: Will search within all patent classifications, including IPC, CPC, Locarno classification, FI classification, F-TERM classification, and UPC classification
- IPC: Supports range search for classification number sub classes. Search for patents that contain any classification numbers that exist between the two classification numbers.
- IPC_SECTION: Searches within a particular classification section, for example "H".
- IPC_CLASS: Searches within a particular classification class, for example "H04".
- IPC_SUB_CLASS: Searches within a particular classification sub class, for example "H04W".
- IPC_GROUP: Searches within a particular classification group, for example"A21B3".
- IPC_SUB_GROUP: Searches within a particular classification sub group, for example "A21B3/04".
- MIPC: Searches for records that have this particular classification as their main classification or within a range of classification, for example: "[A21B3/04 TO A21B3/16]"
- .... and many more classification searching options as found on Search Helper!
