In this workflow, we will begin with a patent search in Synapse for the drug Ibuprofen and then proceed to the Analytics platform to further refine our results by excluding certain keywords.
Starting on the home screen of Synapse, navigate to the patent search by clicking on the "Patent" tab on the left-hand sidebar:
Upon reaching the search page, input the drug name "Ibuprofen" into the "Patent Drug" search bar. You will observe that as you type the drug name, it will appear in the dropdown menu below, allowing you to select it.
On the search page, you'll find a section labeled "Keywords" where you can input specific terms of interest to fine-tune your search results. One limitation to be aware of is that Synapse doesn't offer the option to utilize the "NOT" operator, which means you cannot exclude particular keywords directly. For instance, if you wished to filter out patents containing the term "Oral," Synapse lacks this capability. This is where the transition to Analytics proves invaluable, as it provides the means to address this limitation and enhance your search experience.
Once you've chosen the drug name, proceed by clicking on the blue "Search" button situated at the bottom of the page. Although you have the option to utilize the filters on the left side of the page to fine-tune your results, in this particular workflow, we will bypass additional refinement steps and instead navigate directly to Analytics. To do so, simply click on the "View in Analytics" button positioned near the top right corner of the page to access and explore the results within the Analytics platform:
Once on the Analytics results page, we will use the "Advanced Refinement" tool to exclude the keyword. The tool is located near the search bar on the top left of the page above the filters section:
Within the pop-up window that appears, click on the "AND" operator to modify it to "NOT" and then choose "TACD" from the provided drop-down menu. Following this adjustment, input the keyword "Oral" and proceed by clicking the "Search" button:
These steps will result in further refinement, reducing the number of results from 1647 to 432. For additional fine-tuning, consider utilizing the available filters located on the left-hand side of the page.
By seamlessly transitioning from Synapse to Analytics, you can overcome limitations such as the inability to exclude certain keywords, as showcased in this guide. With the power of the "Advanced Refinement" tool, refining results becomes a straightforward process, ultimately streamlining the patent search and enabling you to access the most relevant information with ease.
