Semantic Sorting Option in Search Results Page
Once you have performed a technology search, you will see there is an option to rank the results based off a Semantic Search.
Like with Semantic Search, you can either input a piece of text or publication number and we will bring the most related results compared to your input to the top.
From here, you will also be able to see who some of your main competitors in this technology area potentially would be.
Currently, semantic sorting is not supported in Workspaces. We recommend using the classification filter to refine your results to a specific technology area. You will also be able to see your top competitors from here.

Advanced Keyword Refinement for Patent Searches
You can refine your results via keywords using our advanced refinement feature on the search results page or workspace.
To access the advanced refinement tool, select the filter icon in the top left-hand corner.
Alternatively for workspaces, select “refine” under the “data management” tab, and select the filter icon:
Next select the field which you would like to refine in, and input the words you would like to refine by:
After selecting search, only patents containing your keywords will be displayed in your results.
We also recommend using “Custom Analysis” from both the search results page and in a Workspace as this will allow you to get a visual representation of your results. You can read more about this in the following article: How Do I Use The Custom Analysis?

Technology searching using IPC/CPC/Technology Topics/Application Domain
Using the Field Search and selecting one of the “Classification” fields will allow you to search within a technology field of interest. This will help you locate patents relevant to the inventions within the space you are interested in.
To narrow down your search you can always add additional search requirements such as publication date, keywords and so forth.
Once you are happy with your search you can immediately spot the main top players within this technology area by looking at the list of assignee’s on your filters situated on the left hand side of the screen.
To provide additional visual representation of this information, a “Custom Analysis” can be used.
Within “Custom Analysis” you can then edit and change the charts available to view various information.
Starting from the standard “Top Standardized Current Assignee” which allows you to see the main competitors in this area.
To viewing what the main focus areas are for these competitors within this area.
Alternatively, you can select the “Analysis” view and this will populate charts that might be useful for further competitive overview.
All the charts here are interactive and you can dig deeper into different verticals.
For example, you can utilise the Primary Problems addressed to see what tech area are focussed and then drill down by clicking on “View in Analytics” to view what assignees are within this area.
