You are able to compare any two patents with each other within PatSnap, although you will generally want to compare two patents of the same language to gain the full benefit of the functionality available.
Additionally, you can compare semantic search text with patents, which can help you understand how we determine certain results as similar patents when conducting a semantic search. Only supports English and Chinese text.
Comparing two patents:
Places to compare
There are a few different places where you are able to compare patents with each other, which are as follows:
1. Search results page
You can select multiple patents to compare with each other from the search results page.
2. Workspace
From Workspaces, you are able to do a similar comparison, as from the search results page.
3. Patent view - Citation tab
4. Patent view - Family tab
5. Patent view - Similar Patents tab
What can be compared?
Standard patent view functionality
When you compare two patents with each other, you can view them side-by-side with each other. Using this, you are able to compare abstracts, claims, descriptions, images and PDFs.
Additionally, we will show you similarities found between the patents if any. If not, text will be displayed at the the top of your screen saying: "No similar text found".
Furthermore, you can toggle between patents displayed by using the "list" feature on the right hand-side.
Other functionalities that are carried over from the regular patent view page are:
- Translation
- PDF Download
- Saving to a Workspace
- File Wrapper Alerts
- Quick save to a Workspace
- Sending the patent link in an email
- Copying the patent link to your clipboard
- Highlighting
- Comments
Comparing text input with a patent:
You can compare your semantic text input with a patents by clicking "compare" in the semantic search results page (this will only compare text to a patents claims and description).
Once you select "compare" it will open a new page consisting of three sections:
The left section will display your text input in the form of technical feature. If the text you entered is long, then the text will be split multiple technical features. Additionally, if you wish to edit the text you have inputted or add a new technical feature, then you can select "change record" or "Return to edit input page".
Furthermore, you can change the display to display a patent rather than text. To do this, select "Switch to patent record" in the edit menu.
Then search a patent number and select "compare".
The middle section will display a similar patent, and highlight the similarities between the patent and text you inputted.
The right section will display other similar hits within the same patent.
Additionally, you could select the "list" button to see other patent results which have similar text, and change the patent displayed in the middle section. The 1000 records chosen are your semantic search results.
Other places to compare a patent to text input:
In the search results page of a semantic search. If you are in standard view and you hover over a patent you can select the "compare" button.
Additionally, in any search results page (no matter what the search type was used e.g. simple, field, semantic, etc.) if you select the tick box on the left hand side and then select "compare records"
The compare page will open up. The left hand side will be blank where you can enter your own technical description or patent publication number, and the right hand side will display the list of your select records.
Note: This feature only supports Chinese and English text, and will not translate the text and then compare to a patent.
