Introduction
You can view more details about a specific company within Discovery by taking a look at their profile page. There are various insights you can gleam from doing this for a company. This includes which markets they operate in both technologically and geographically, their financial information and their relationship with others.
This can be found by either searching specifically for that company or for a technology. You can then reach the company profile page by clicking into the company of interest either from the list of suggested companies from the initial search page or from the company results page.
Once you click into the company, you will then be taken to the following page:
The following 4 options are available anywhere within the company profile:
- Compare - Allows you to compare up to 4 companies with each other. This is described in more detail later.
- Follow - Allows you to personalize your news feed and receive the latest updates.
- Share Profile - Allows you to share a public link of a company profile to anyone. If a non-user clicks on this link, then they will have no drill-down, analysis features or left-hand side menu.
- Create Alert - Allows you to get updates on the company's activity across the data points of your choice. These updates will be sent to you via email on either a daily or weekly basis depending on your preference. You can find more details about alerts in the following section: Alerts.
Overview
This provides a complete overview with the most important signals and insights of a company.
The top section of this tab provides a description of the company. If you got to the company profile page via a search, you will also see an explanation of why this company was brought back.
Below this, you can see the "Data Snapshot" which provides you with the total count of items for each data type that this company has. This helps you understand where a company has focused more of their efforts in, and which data types they have less activity in.
Below this, you can see "Enterprise Technology" which gives a quick overview of the company's technical portfolio using the top keywords and phrases extracted from the latest 5000 patents for them. This allows you to quickly understand the key technical terms related to this company and drill down to the patents that lie beneath. You can view this chart either as a word cloud or as network.
Next, you can see "Mainly Solved Technical Problems", where the technical problem phrase is extracted from the description of the technical problem in the invention content, which is used to analyze the technical problem that the company is mainly solving in a specific technical field. You're able to limit this analysis to specific tech topics for this company.
On the left, there is a chart that details the top 10 themes of the problems solved in a given time period. On the right, you will see a chart that breaks these down to the technical output of these solved problems.
Next, you can see "R&D Sustainability", which shows the application grant success rate over time of this company's patent portfolio. The frequency of patent technology output and the authorization ratio fluctuation within a specific time period reflect the sustainability of a company's R&D efforts.
Next, you have "Stability Of The Core R&D Team", which shows the number of applications over time of the most prolific inventors employed by this company. This is useful because it determines some of the key talent of a company and if they would be worth employing yourself.
Next, you can see "Innovation Matrix", which helps identify both the hot and blank application areas by visualizing the company's technical portfolio across multiple dimensions. This helps to understand their current technical portfolio and to identify white space or FTO opportunites.
Finally, you can see "Innovation Strategy", which analyses a company's R&D focus based on the statistical results from the following 5 indicators:
- Academic Drive - This metric calculates the proportion of patents that cite non-patent literature (such as academic papers) in a company's entire patent portfolio.
- Diversification - This metric calculates the proportion of patents in a company's entire patent portfolio that are filed across different technology areas (IPC classifications).
- Internationalization - This metric calculates the proportion of patents in a company's entire patent portfolio that have investors from different countries or regions.
- Colloborative Research and Development - This metric calculates the proportion of patents in a company's entire patent portfolio that have been jointly filed with other companies or institutions.
- Specialization - This metric calculates the proportion of patents in a company's entire patent portfolio that are classified under a single IPC classification.
Tech Index
This tab provides you with a number of charts based off indicators used to quantify a company's technical strength. This supports you by providing valuable insights for use in any future competitive and cooperative analysis. You can also select one tech topic at a time to perform analysis.
Firstly, you have "Summary", which shows what are the biggest technological strengths of this company.
Next, you have "Technological growth potential", which allows you to assess this company's technology's growth potential by analyzing R&D trends and personnel activity. We show you the patent growth rate, technological effectiveness growth rate, invention patent growth rate and number of active inventors. Additionally, we provide a graph with the application trend in the past 6 years.
Next, is "Technological originality", which enables you to assess this company's technology's originality based on self-research rate and patent originality index. We show you the patent self-reliance rate, patent originality, technological intensity index and technological independence. Additionally, we provide a graph comparing the number of patents that have been self-developed and purchased by this company in the past 6 years.
Next, we have "Technological influence", which provides you with an assessment of the company's technology's influence in the field based on R&D trends and quality. We show you the immediate impact index, technological generality, technological concentration and effective number of invention patents. Additionaly, we provide a graphic that shows the biggest citing companies of this company's patents along with the technical efficacy most associated with those patents.
Lastly, there is "Internationalization", which facilitates you to evaluate the technology's global presence based on applications and R&D. We show you the number of covered countries, coverage by the top 5 patent offices, patent coverage growth rate across countries and PCT application volume. Additionally, we provide a map that shows which countries this company files their most patents.
Similar Company
This tab allows you to see other companies that are similar and compare their innovation strength with the company you are currently viewing. This helps you quickly find other companies with high technology similarity compared to a company of interest. This is a highly efficient methodology to find relevant companies.
Firstly, you have "Similar Companies", which lists the most similar companies compared to the viewing company. It shows the similarity score and the topics which have a high similarity for those companies.
The similarity score calculation is based on tech topics, industry and application domains labelled on the patent.
You are also able to include subsidiaries within your analysis. This will consider the top 5 subsidiaries and augment the most similar companies to them within this table.
You also have "Innovation Strength Comparison", which allows you to directly compare the currently viewed companies against the top most similar companies from the list before.
This can also have subsidiaries considered for the analysis. This will additionally consider the top 5 subsidiaries and their most similar companies.
Relationships

Business Events
This tab gives you an overview of the business events relating to this company. This allows you to gain an understanding of the key updates relating to this company and how it operates within the market.
The top of this tab provides you with details on the funding that this company has received. You can see a cumulative trend of the funding, a breakdown of their funding rounds, details of the funding from venture capitalists and any news relating to these funding events.
Next, "Funding History" gives you an overview of the funding that this company has received. This enables you to understand when the technology associated with this company was being supported and most likely was at it's early stages.
"Investment History" gives you an overview of the investments that this company has made into other organizations. This allows you to understand the technologies that this company is investing in and potentially planning to look into operating within in the future.
Co-Investors provides you with a spider diagram of the top companies that co-invest with the company of interest. These companies likely co-operate well with each other.
Next, you have "Acquistion Timeline" which provides a timeline of the organizations that this company has acquired. This provides you with a greater understanding of the technology areas that this company is looking to work further within it and the companies that they have acquired to be able to do that.
Lastly, "Financial" provides you with financial information based on this company's recent performance. This is important information as it gives you a true number-based reflection of how this company is doing and whether or not they are in an upward trend of performance.
- Market Cap: This graph provides you with a trend of the total value of this company's stock over a given time period.
- Revenue: This graph provides you with a trend of the revenue, net margin and gross product margin for this company over a given time period.
Next, you have the "Financial Statement", which allows you to view the "Income statement", "Balance sheet" and "Cash flow" for this company.
News
This tab provides you with details on the news that relates to this company. This is useful information since it allows you to understand how much this company's recent work has been reported on and how they may become a bigger player in their technology area due to this.
- Summary: This provides you with a summary of the key numbers relating to news for this company and it's subsidiaries.
- Top Contributing Subsidiaries: This provides you with a list of the top mentioned subsidiaries in news articles.
Below this, you can see "News Analysis" for this company, which provides you with various charts regarding the news for this company. You can also display subsidiary data here.
- Trend Of News: This provides you with a yearly trend over the last 5 years of the number of news items related to this company.
- Business Heatmap: This provides you with geographical distribution of the origin of the news relating to this company.
- News List: This provides you with a list of the most relevant recent news relating to this company.
Compare
This option allows you to compare up to 4 companies with each other using various different metrics. This is useful since it allows you to have a direct comparison between them and see which of them is the biggest player in this technology space.
You are also able to consider each company's subsidiaries in the comparison.
- Market Cap: This graph provides you with a trend of the total value of these companies' stock over a given time period.
- Revenue: This graph provides you with a trend of the revenue, net margin and gross product margin for these companies over a given time period.
- Portfolio Size: This graph shows this companies' patenting activity in each given year. You can select which of the stages to show the graph in for each stage: Filed (patent application is filed), Published (patent application is published 18 months from the filing date), Granted (patent is granted and published in its final form).
- Portfolio Value: This graph shows the estimated total value of these companies' patent portfolio over a given recent time period.
- News: This graph provides you with a trend of the number of recent news items related to each of these companies.
- Funding Rounds: This chart provides you with a trend in the amount of funding that each of these companies has received in funding rounds within the last few years.
