    Hi Tobias,

    The 2nd query here is a subset of the 1st and this is because the way the IPC_CPC syntax works.

    For the IPC_CPC syntax, when you combine 2 codes with the "AND" operator then both those codes have to be present in either the IPC or CPC field for a patent.

    If I use Expert Search to see which patents from the 2nd query don't match the 1st, you can see an example below of one of these patents.

    Hello James,

    Thanks for this. It was as I suspected, but that can't be entirely true after all. Because if I use the query (in expert mode) IPC_CPC:(Y02C20/40 and B01D53/14) I get several documents with CPC code Y02C20/40 and IPC B01D53/14.

    No worries at all.

    In this case, Y02C20/40 and B01D53/14(93) are CPC codes for this patent. Do you have an example where this is also not the case?

    I will be happy to raise this with our data team if so.
